Chapter Thirteen

We said farewell to Juan after thanking him for the ride. It had been a little on the wild side. We actually passed the train about thirty miles before we got to Boceguillas. I had hoped that once he realized we were in the clear, Juan might lighten up on the gas pedal a bit. No such luck. Once we had passed the train, he seemed intent on setting new speed records for travel in a vehicle without shock absorbers.

The highway had been a blur, oncoming cars going from distant points on the horizon to a faint glow in the rearview mirror with frightening speed. Rudy's viselike grip on my thigh made my entire leg numb. I really couldn't blame him. Even I was ready to kiss the ground when Juan's truck finally shuddered to a stop in front of the depot.

"My God!" Rudy exclaimed. "I'll never complain about a slow train again for as long as I live. I think that in the future, I'd rather face an artillery barrage. You at least have a possibility of dodging the bullets. I saw my life flash before my eyes on at least six separate occasions."

We had time for a couple of much-needed beers in the station bar before the train rumbled in. Fortunately, no one challenged us when we returned to the luxurious rail car that Ahmed had provided for us. We searched the train from end to end, but found no sign of him. After we gave up, we hunkered down dejectedly, our only choice to sit and wait.
